M&E Design Manager
Cardiff. Permanent role with Thatcher Associates, the specialist construction & property desk.
About the role
Competitive salary · car allowance · private healthcare and incentive scheme
Do you prefer getting the design right before anyone is on site? Ready for a pre-construction M&E role with a Tier 1 contractor, rather than site delivery? Would you like to be the person who signs off a design as compliant and buildable?
The company
Our client is one of the UK's leading Tier 1 main contractors, working across education, healthcare, commercial, industrial, leisure and public sector markets. The Cardiff team delivers schemes across South Wales and the surrounding region, mostly two-stage and design-led. Its Building Services team brings M&E expertise into pre-construction, so designs are compliant, coordinated and buildable before work starts on site.
The role
You would lead MEP design review and coordination on two-stage schemes, from pre-construction through to early construction. You would work alongside the Bid Manager, Pre-construction Director and Head of Building Services on residential, commercial and education schemes of around £10m to £80m. This is not a site delivery role: installation and commissioning sit with the delivery teams.
What you'll do
- Lead MEP design reviews, technical workshops and design coordination through pre-construction
- Challenge consultant and subcontractor designs, and sign off coordinated, compliant designs before work starts
- Make sure designs meet the Building Safety Act, including Gateway 2 and 3 on higher-risk buildings, and CDM
- Coordinate design in BIM, using tools such as Revit, Navisworks, Solibri or BIM 360 / ACC
- Assess value engineering proposals and utilities strategies, and flag the risks
- Manage specialist packages as well as mechanical and electrical, including sprinklers, utilities, PV and renewables
- Support two-stage tenders and hand a buildable design over to the delivery team
You'll need
- M&E or MEP design management experience with a Tier 1 main contractor on schemes of around £10m to £80m
- Experience of two-stage, pre-construction or Design and Build work
- Good working knowledge of the Building Safety Act and CDM
- An HNC, HND or degree in building services (CIBSE membership, IEng or CEng a bonus)
- A full UK driving licence and the right to work in the UK
What's in it for you
- Commpetitive basic salary
- Car allowance
- Private healthcare, an incentive scheme and Sharesave
- A design-led role with no site delivery
