Fire Alarm Engineer (Small Works)
Birmingham. Permanent role with Thatcher Associates, the specialist trades & maintenance desk.
About the role
Midlands (mobile) | Salary competitive, dependent on experience | Company van, tools, laptop and phone provided
The opportunity
Our client is an established fire protection and life safety systems provider, delivering installation, upgrade and commissioning work across commercial, industrial and residential sites throughout the Midlands.
This is a hands-on role within their Small Works team, covering planned minor installation projects: upgrading and extending existing fire alarm systems, and smaller standalone installations. You will work to BS 5839 Part 1 on addressable and conventional systems, taking a project from quote through to commissioning and client sign-off. It will suit someone who is comfortable working independently on site, takes ownership of the standard of their own work, and is confident dealing directly with clients and other trades.
What you'll be doing
- Install, modify and commission addressable and conventional fire alarm systems, including Gent, Advanced, Kentec, Morley and C-Tec, on planned small works projects
- Carry out cable containment (tray, trunking, conduit) and associated electrical work, interpreting system designs, drawings and specifications on site
- Act as the main point of contact for clients on your projects, attending site meetings and keeping them updated as work progresses
- Coordinate small works engineers and subcontractors on site, and support the technical development of junior engineers
- Complete electronic job sheets, commissioning certificates and as-fitted drawings, and assist with quoting, material procurement, labour allocation and risk assessments
What you'll need
- NVQ Level 2 or 3 in Fire Alarm Systems or Electrical Installation
- BAFE SP203-1 certification, or working towards it
- FIA training certificates covering Fundamentals of Fire Detection and Alarm Systems, and the Design, Installation, Maintenance and Commissioning modules
- Working knowledge of the 17th/18th Edition Wiring Regulations (BS 7671)
- CSCS or ECS card in a relevant discipline
- IPAF, PASMA, Asbestos Awareness and Working at Height training
- Full UK driving licence
- Minimum 3 to 5 years' experience installing, upgrading and commissioning fire alarm systems, ideally gained in small works or projects
SSSTS or SMSTS would be useful if you have led sites or teams before, and familiarity with other life safety systems such as emergency lighting, AOVs or fire extinguishers is an advantage, though not essential.
What's on offer
- Salary competitive and dependent on experience
- Company van, tools, laptop and phone provided
- Ongoing training and development, with support to progress within the business
- A mobile role based in the Midlands, with occasional travel to surrounding areas
The practical detail
This role is field based, covering the Midlands with occasional travel further afield. You will be working at height and in live construction and refurbishment environments alongside main contractors and other trades, so current IPAF, PASMA and Asbestos Awareness training is required before you start.
