General Foreman – Bridge Programme
Caribbean. Permanent role with Thatcher Associates, the specialist construction & property desk.
About the role
THE ROLE
Thatcher Associates is recruiting a General Foreman on behalf of our client, a contractor delivering a bridge construction programme in the Caribbean. This is a hands-on site leadership role, responsible for the day-to-day running of works across multiple bridge structures, coordinating trades and subcontractors, and making sure the programme stays on schedule, on budget, and to specification.
You will report to the Project Manager and work closely with the site engineering team, subcontractors, and the client's representatives on site.
- Manage daily site operations across bridge construction activities, including foundations, substructure, superstructure, and deck works.
- Supervise and coordinate direct labour and subcontractors, allocating tasks and monitoring output against programme targets.
- Read and work from structural drawings and specifications, resolving practical queries on site.
- Enforce health and safety standards, toolbox talks, and site inductions in line with client and regulatory requirements.
- Track progress against the construction programme and flag delays or resourcing issues to the Project Manager early.
- Liaise with quality control and engineering staff to ensure works meet design tolerances and client standards.
- Manage plant, equipment, and material deliveries to keep works running without downtime.
- Maintain daily site records, including labour returns, progress reports, and incident logs.
- Support procurement and site engineers with quantities, sequencing, and access requirements.
- Uphold environmental controls, particularly where works are near water, coastal areas, or protected land.
- Minimum 8 years' experience in heavy civil construction, with at least 3 years specifically on bridge or major structures projects.
- Proven experience as a General Foreman or Senior Foreman on a project of comparable scale.
- Strong working knowledge of bridge construction methods (piling, formwork, falsework, in-situ and precast concrete, post-tensioning is an advantage).
- Ability to read and interpret structural and civil drawings.
- Confident managing multi-trade crews and subcontractors on a live site.
- Working knowledge of health and safety regulations applicable to civil works (OSHA, or equivalent Caribbean regional standards).
- Experience working in the Caribbean or a similar tropical, coastal, or island environment is preferred but not essential.
- Physically able to work outdoors on an active construction site, including at height and near water.
- Willingness to relocate to the site location for the duration of the programme.
- Caribbean or South American Nationals.
- Trade qualification or equivalent construction-related certification.
- First aid and site safety certifications (or willingness to obtain before mobilisation).
- Valid passport, with no restrictions on travel to the Caribbean region.
- Competitive salary, dependent on experience (details on application).
- Flights to and from site at the start and end of contract.
- Local transport provided or allowance given.
- Contract length and rotation schedule to be confirmed at interview stage.
