A fast-growing utilities organisation is seeking an Assistant Engineer – Electrical Planning & Design to support major infrastructure and system expansion projects. This role is ideal for an engineer who wants to build deep technical expertise while contributing to distribution system design, grid modernisation initiatives, and cross-functional project delivery.

You will work closely with senior engineers, operations teams, customers, government stakeholders, procurement, and field technicians to support the design and execution of projects such as new resort developments, system relocations, underground/overhead distribution upgrades, and reliability improvements. This is a hands-on engineering role combining design, technical studies, QA/QC, project coordination, and customer–stakeholder engagement

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design overhead and underground distribution systems for new developments, relocations, and reliability projects

  • Prepare engineering drawings, material specifications, and construction cost estimates

  • Perform technical studies including load flow, fault current analysis, voltage drop, and reliability assessments

  • Support scoping, scheduling, and budget monitoring for assigned projects

  • Liaise with customers, contractors, and government officials throughout the project lifecycle

  • Ensure QA/QC standards are met across major engineering deliverables

  • Provide technical support during construction, commissioning, and outage investigations

  • Support procurement coordination, ERP documentation, and project reporting

  • Collaborate with field operations, procurement, warehouse, and internal teams to align design requirements

  • Contribute to grid modernization efforts, including automation, DER integration, and storm resilience planning

  • Participate in emergency and storm restoration when required.

Qualifications:

Required

  • 4+ years engineering experience or 9+ years directly related utility/industry experience

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and technical capability

  • Valid driver’s licence and ability to work in both office and field environments

  • Excellent communication and customer-facing skills

Desired

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (Master’s preferred)

  • PE licence or ability to obtain

  • Experience in utility distribution planning, design, or project management

  • Knowledge of electrical codes, standards, and regulatory requirements

  • Proficiency with engineering software (AutoCAD, ESRI, FUTURA, etc.)

Skills & Attributes:

  • Strong grounding in distribution engineering principles

  • Ability to evaluate technical data and recommend practical solutions

  • Comfortable coordinating across engineering, field operations, government stakeholders, and customers

  • Highly organised, detail-oriented, and adaptable to a dynamic, start-up utility environment
